It’s a known fact that, in Brazil, literature is pervaded by works that deal with the school. There are numerous writers, in different moments and social contexts, that take upon themselves fictionally to represent the schooling process. On examining Brazilian fictional works that manifest this thematic orientation, I propose to look into the school, on the basis of its modes of internalization in our literature, and to speculate on its meaning in our society. As a result, the critical nature of such representation was identified in all the works taken into account, as well as the recurrence of certain issues, and their relevance to the debate on Education in the country, even in the present times. Some of these issues were the violence and oppressive character of the school’s environment.
